Charlie arrived a little bit early. His mom Kate and I had planned on having his first session in mid-October, but I guess he decided he couldn't wait that long :) I was so happy to meet him! He's incredibly adorable, with probably the cutest little nose ever.

I don’t usually get all weepy over weddings, but I must say, this one really got me. The combination of lovely weather, a gorgeous bride, a handsome groom, and his two sweet, adorable daughters made for pretty much the perfect day.

Oh yeah, and lots and lots of love, smiles, and laughter – that made it pretty great too :)

Holly and Kevin allowed FOUR hours for wedding party photos – which was amazing (hint to future brides/grooms – allow your photographer lots of time for photos, you won’t be sorry!). It made for a really relaxed atmosphere where everyone could enjoy themselves. We even stumbled upon a carnival in Forest Park that we were not expecting, and since we had lots of time we used that opportunity to get some really fun shots on the rides (which are my favorites from the day!).

Getting ahead of myself though – we started off the day at the beautiful Lemp Mansion:

At Busch Stadium we convinced some fans to jump in this photo with Holly and Kevin - and when I say convinced I really mean it. The first few people we asked looked at us like we were insane. People are so untrusting, sheesh!

I've never done wedding photos at the Arch, but I'm glad a got the chance. I used to work there so it's kind of old hat to me, but I was surprised at how pretty the surface of it looks in photographs. The tree-lined walkways are really great too. I might have to try and photograph there more often :)

When we arrived at Forest Park I had planned on using the Muny, but as we approached we could tell that wasn't going to be possible. There were booths and tents set up in front of it with the street blocked off. As we made our way past it, we drove by a field where they had set up some rides and we decided we kind of HAD to stop and take some photos. I'm so glad we did :)

After Forest Park we made a quick pit stop at Holly's house, where we took advantage of the last few golden bits of sunlight.

Back to the Lemp for a quick carriage ride, and to start the celebration!

Holly and Kevin, thank you so much for allowing me to photograph your day. I had so much fun and was honored to be a part of it. I wish your new family the best of luck and a lifetime of happiness!

{Fall Mini Sessions}

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year! I have a feeling I'm going to especially enjoy it after the insane heat this summer brought us! This year September and October filled up really quickly for me, so I’ve decided to offer some half-hour mini sessions in November. This is the perfect chance to update pictures of the kiddos, get a family shot for your holiday cards, or treat yourself just for fun :)

When: Sunday, November 6th
Where: Tower Gove Park (exact location within park TBD)
Time: Limited sessions available from 11:30 – 2:30

Types of sessions I will be accepting:
Kids and Babies
Families (no more than 4 people)
Individuals
Couples
Pets!

I will be supplying some props such as blankets, chairs, and fall-ish things like pumpkins, etc. (and most likely some vintage goodies too!), but feel free to bring your own small props if there’s something you wish to use.

Price
$125 – Includes sitting fee and one high-resolution disc containing at least 20 final images.

*Please keep in mind that since these are shorter sessions I will not be able to accommodate clothing changes or large groups. If you are interested in a more involved session please contact me and we can work something out at a later date.

Cassie and Chris {Senior Portraits}

Cassie is the daughter of one of my coworkers. I met up with her and her boyfriend Chris (and their moms) at Faust Park a few weeks ago. It was a lovely day (despite the mosquitoes that apparently LOVE Chris), and we had a really good time!

Melissa Schmidt Jewelry

I am so excited about this post – where to begin….

Jenn (our lovely model for this shoot) met Melissa at an art fair a few months ago where she fell in love with her jewelry. After chatting about some options for what Jenn might wear at her wedding this fall, Melissa suggested that maybe Jenn could model some of her pieces for a portfolio update. Jenn agreed and mentioned she knew a photographer (me!). After lots of emails about locations, ideas, etc. and one brainstorming get-together, we decided on a date and location.

The original plan was to have Jenn modeling Melissa’s pieces in her wedding dress at the Contemporary Art Museum where she’ll be getting married this fall, but due to scheduling difficulties with CAM, Melissa suggested we use her stepdad’s home in Clayton. She mentioned that he’s an art collector, and while that sounded cool to me, I was truly unprepared for the amazing-ness of his home. He had so much beautiful and interesting art, I was in shock. Jenn was too when she walked in the door. We just kept looking at each other and saying, “Um, seriously?!”….it was incredible, and such a treat to shoot there (I didn’t want to leave!).

This was my first time doing any sort of product photography, so it was really exciting. Jenn’s makeup was done by the talented Emily Miller, however, we did not have a stylist for this shoot - just Jenn’s amazing wardrobe, a great setting, and of course Melissa’s stunning jewelry. We all kind of just winged it, and I personally think we got some lovely results :)

Ashley + Gerren {Engagement Session}

I met Ashley a couple years ago through my sister - I'd heard so much about "G" but hadn't met him. All I knew was that Ashley moved to Indiana for him so he must be a great guy :) I was so thrilled to finally meet him and photograph these two here in St. Louis. They truly are hilarious and so much fun, you can tell they are just perfect for each other. We had planned on going to the spot where G proposed to Ashley and then heading downtown to Busch Stadium, but due to unforeseen circumstances we didn't make it to either of those locations. We ended up at Forest Park, and then headed down to the Grand/Washington area and Ashley and G just rolled with the punches. We had a great time and I am extremely excited about photographing their wedding next year!

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I've been pretty lazy about about updating my blog. This is mainly due to the fact that it is INCREDIBLY time consuming to do so! I'm patiently waiting for a new site that will allow easier updating to the blog section, so until then I can't make any promises that I'll be on top of my updating, but I sure will try!!

So it has been AGES since I updated my blog. I plan on posting lots and lots of what I've been working on recently, but until then I thought this was a good one to start with.

Oh where to begin....

First of all, this wedding was so fun to photograph, not only because I got to work with my lovely, talented friend Sara Keller (see her post here), but also because we had the pleasure of photographing an amazing and fun couple and their awesome friends.

I woke up on Saturday morning full of dread. After a week of obsessively checking the weather, I expected to be greeted with storms. And even though I don't believe in that stuff, I was admittedly a little freaked out by all of the "rapture" talk. However, it ended up being a gorgeous, sunny, WARM day - and instead of the world ending, a beautiful new life for Katie and Brennen began :)

Okay, maybe I got carried away with the rings. So sue me :) Meanwhile, Katie was putting on the final touches and almost ready to meet her groom in the lobby...

Katy + Ryan {Engagement Session}

Katy, Ryan and I met up on a VERY COLD winter day. I had talked to Katy through email about the wedding, but we had never met in person. I was extremely delighted to find that these two are such a fun couple! Despite the frigid temps (I think it was around 17 degrees that day) we had a blast and they were such good sports!

We started out at the Jewel Box in Forest Park...

Then headed outdoors into the freezing cold! It was well worth it - I love these shots with the blanket!

We stopped at Kayak Coffee to warm up and get a hot drink (p.s. totally envious of Katy's amazing scarf).

Our last destination was the Moonrise Hotel, where they let us sneak some shots in the lobby. I adore the ones in front of the moon prints!

The head chef Wes was kind enough to take us up to the roof...such a nice guy!

My new nephew was born last Friday. He is pretty much the sweetest little guy ever, I'm obsessed with him. These are some of the shots I did at the hospital...we are doing his official newborn shoot tomorrow. Poor guy is going to get really sick of me and my camera :) More pics to come!

With 2010 quickly coming to a close, I thought I should give a heads-up to what might be in store for 2011. Firstly, a name change will most likely be in the near future. I will be getting married in October of next year, and for some reason "Katharine Forbis Photography" is just not sounding quite right :) So, I am brainstorming ideas for a new name for my photography.

Secondly, I am working on a new price list. I'm trying not to increase my prices by a ridiculous amount and will most likely remain considerably cheaper than other studios in the area. If you and I have already discussed pricing for a session next year, these new prices will not apply to you. The reason for the price increase is that I am in desperate need of new equipment...and unfortunately it isn't cheap. I would also like to continue to make a profit so that I can work toward the goal of obtaining a small studio sometime in the future. I appreciate your support so much!

Lastly, a new website will (hopefully) be in the works as well. Please stay tuned for more updates - I will do my best to keep everyone in the loop.

Thank you to all of my lovely clients for making 2010 such a wonderful and successful year for me. I look forward to continuing to work with you all and I'm also excited about new clients and new possibilities in 2011. Have a happy and safe holiday season!

Abigail's mom Rachael used to work with my fiance at Schupp company. Before she went on maternity leave he gave her my card, and I was thrilled when she contacted me. Her little Abby is now 3 months old and wow is she a cutie! 3 months can be a difficult age to capture, but she was such a wonderful little model. And I was totally obsessed with the red and white striped hat that we used in a few shots...probably the most adorable thing I've ever seen.

These pictures make me happy. Like, REALLY happy.

Backstory: Jenn and I went to gradeschool together and we haven't seen each other in years and years. To my delight, she contacted me about some engagement photos. When I met up with Jenn and her fiance Chris at her apartment I had the familiar nervous/excited feeling I get when I reconnect with people I haven't seen in a long time. I had no reason to be nervous, however, because these two are just about as easy-going as they come. We had such a good time and I'm kind of obsessed with these photos. I'm pretty sure I had a big goofy grin on my face the whole time I was editing :)

Engagement Photos

Michael Forbis and I got engaged in June. We started talking about when and where to do our engagement photos, and who would take them. My good friend Sara is a great photographer, but unfortunately at that time she thought she and her husband would have already moved to Canada. We thought about hiring another photographer that we really liked, but didn't know if if would be too short of notice and too expensive. So we decided that we would do them ourselves, with some help from our amazingly talented and creative friends.

We decided to take them in and around the small town of St. James, MO, where my family and I would go several times each summer when we were kids. My parents just recently purchased my grandma's home there, so we thought it would be really fun to invite our friends and make a weekend out of it.

I brought my camera equipment and gave a crash course in how to use a couple lenses. I set up the exposures and let them do the shooting. I was blown away with how great they turned out. I may just have to start recruiting them to help me out more often :)

I put my stamp on these photos, but the credit really goes to my sister Val, her fiance Dave, and my friends Aron and AJ for handling the cameras, and also to my cousin Megan and AJ's gal Christina for hanging out with us throughout the afternoon. You guys are so awesome, I cannot thank you enough for the great memories and these photos that I will treasure forever.

New Toy

One of my coworkers recently got an infrared converted D70, and he was nice enough to let me borrow it. I am obsessed! The images below were taken at a park near my apartment. We're going to the country this weekend and I'm so excited to play with this camera a little more. I'm sure there will be lots more to come!

My birthday was a few weeks ago. One year ago on that day we brought home Ruby. I forgot to do something special for her, so I thought I'd do a post in her honor.

My parents found Ruby at a campground...or rather, she found them :) She was exhausted, underweight, and losing her hair due to some kind of skin infection. She wouldn't leave them alone. My parents already have two dogs, but being the softies they are, couldn't resist bringing her home to nurse her back to health. My dad called a lot of places around the area in which they found her to see if anyone had reported a missing dog. No luck. So my fiance and I decided to take her in.

It hasn't been a easy road.

This dog loves to run. And by run I mean away. She's energetic and curious. She wants in on the action. That's probably why she was found wandering around some random campground in the first place. She eats a lot and is really good at helping us spend our paychecks on bones, food, chew toys, leashes, collars and vet visits. And maybe an outfit here or there :) She smells weird and covers our apartment in hair. She farts. A lot.

All in all, would our lives be easier and less worrisome if we hadn't taken her in? Of course. But there also wouldn't be someone at the door who is always happy to see you no matter what. There wouldn't be someone to make me feel just a little bit safer at night. There wouldn't be someone to squeeze and pet and play with. And just look at her. How could anyone resist her adorableness! After a year of many arguments and a few tears, I still don't regret the day we brought her home. Love you, Ruby Jean!

Matt and Stephanie

It was such a pleasure working with Matt and Stephanie earlier this year! These two are so relaxed and laid-back, and that really made photographing them a breeze. I realized I never did a full post on them, so here it is!

I shot their engagement pictures back in April:

And their wedding was in June. It was held at Chandler Hill Winery, such a beautiful location! We started out the day at Studio Y Salon....

We headed to the hotel to finish getting ready and to catch up with the boys.

We caught a few shots outside right before a major storm blew through!

We then headed over to the winery...

Luckily it stopped raining it time for the ceremony!

They had dueling pianos at the reception. So fun and different!

I sampled one of the cupcakes. I loved it so much that I had to ask Stephanie where they were from so I'd know for my own wedding planning :) They were from Jilly's and stupid good.

A couple of weeks ago I met up with Mirta for her senior portrait session. We had a great time going around St. Louis, and whoa is she gorgeous! Her boyfriend, sister, and puppy dog also made some guest appearances.

Over the weekend I photographed adorable Lillian at the Botanical Gardens. We had such a great time, even if we did have to bribe her with gum and Starbursts :) Such a sweet little girl!

These precious little girls are actually cousins. Beautiful Neva is only a few days old. I LOVE her chubby cheeks!! Stevie is 6 months. She has the most captivating eyes and was such a calm and collected little model. It was a joy to photograph both of these sweet babies :)

Last week I had to go up in helicopter to photograph an event for work. I was a bit terrified, but it turned out to be awesome! Scary yes, but still awesome. We had some time to kill so the guys took me on a "tour" of St. Louis. I got some aerials of a few different parts of the city, and decided to try a tilt-shift effect on some of them. I think they turned out kinda cool. Thanks for looking!

St. Louis Reception

Colin and Heather got married a few weeks ago in Cancun, Mexico. They decided to have a St. Louis reception to celebrate with all of their friends and family. Being huge Cardinals fans, they decided they wanted some pics at Busch Stadium before the reception.
